There has been a whirlwind of action surrounding EI over the last three months starting with the lobbying efforts by the Canadian Building Trades Legislative Assembly.  Since then there has been many events staged to demonstrate the dislike of our current governments lack of action, culminating in the mass demonstration by labour on Saturday June 13, 2009.

Over the last few months we, as a local, have been actively lobbying MP’s for EI reform.  Our efforts have been successful in the fact that all the opposition parties are bringing forward their skewed view on what the reform should be.  The ground swell from the actions of average workers has made an impact on the politicians in Ottawa.

Ontario has found itself, once again, to be the leaders in defining trades qualification.  Over the last year the Provincial governments from across Canada have been working on a method to standardize certification qualifications for trades’ people to migrate from jurisdiction to jurisdiction in order to fill perceived shortages of the skilled trades.

Over the last month IBEW Local 353 in conjunction with The Toronto and York Region Labour Council have been staging various rallies across Toronto. These rallies are meant to bring awareness to the inequities of the EI system.
